The story behind this do-it-yourself propane tank repair resulted in a cold weekend of no heat and no hot water for a family of four. Evidently, the actuated liquid withdrawal excess flow valve was leaking and needed to be repaired. The customer didn't want to spend the money to have it replaced so he went to the local hardware store and bought a threaded plug that would fit in the tank opening where the check-lok valve was. The propane company that was servicing this tank either overlooked it or didn't know that this homegrown repair was illegal. Cold weather set in at the same time the tank ran out of gas but his usual propane company was backed up with gas calls and couldn't get to him that Friday afternoon so he called another company. The delivery driver from the subsequent propane company knew the rules and turned the tank down. The weekend was spent with cold water and no heat with outside temperatures below 40 degrees Farenheit. First of all, don't try and fix your own propane tank and second, choose your propane company wisely so you don't get left in the cold.
