Soldered Propane Tank Safety Relief Valve

soldered propane tank safety relief valve

This is the winner of the "propane do it yourself" Darwin Awards. This safety relief valve was leaking when the propane delivery driver showed up to fill the tank. The propane employee informed the customer of the leaking relief valve and stated that the tank would need to run out of gas so that the relief valve could be replaced. The customer didn't want to pay for the replacement and called the propane company the next day to let them know he had fixed the leaking relief valve. When the same driver showed up later that day, he discovered that the customer had indeed fixed the valve by soldering it closed. The tank had to be pumped out by the service crew so that the valve could be properly replaced. The final bill was twice what it would have been if the customer had listened to the propane professional in the first place. The safety aspect of this do it yourself repair is this: Had the tank been over pressured for any reason and needed to vent, it may have vented by coming apart at the welds...by rupturing. Leave all propane repairs to licensed professionals.
